End this year already

I am ready to close the door on 2008. At least as far as running goes.

Lots of things going well for me at the end of the year here, but I just want to put the 4 month layoff from running behind me.

I have been running consistantly for over a month, and I feel pretty good. I am not running a ton, but I am happy for now.

My heal is still sore, somewhat, but it’s managable. And honestly about half the time I forget that it’s injured at all.

I have also decided that I should switch my training week to Monday through Sunday. That gives me more flexibity with long runs (which I hope to begin adding in the next few weeks). It also prevents wacky reindeer games with running too much on the weekends because they fall in different weeks.

Pretty regularly lately, Bill and I have been doing a Run4Naan. Which means, we park at Passage to India, run 3 miles, and then head inside at the end and eat 4 million calories worth of Naan and other Indian food.

In fact, we met up just last night

Some stats:
Time: 28.29
Distance: 3.01
Average Heart Rate: 147 bpm
Calories Burned: 424

Err did I?

Did I say 11? I’m sorry. My bad. I meant 14. Totally slipped my mind that I was going to run today…

11 Mile week.

Or should I say, weak.

It’s funny, but I am actually really happy with my 11 mile week. I ran 3 miles with Bill on Tuesday night, and and then 3 miles xmas morning, and then 3 miles today. Toss on that, the 2 miler I did on Sunday, and that brings me to 11 for the week.

My heal is sore, but not tragically so. The plan is to stick to another week of 11 and not overdo it.

I also received a foot bath machine for xmas, so I will employ that this week to see if it helps at all.

I forgot my Garmin at work on Tuesday, so I didn’t get a chance to recored any of these runs, that was ok, and nice switch to not have my pace staring at me the whole time…but I miss the data.

Whatever Holiday you celebrate, I hope you had a nice one.

3 miles

3 miles. That’s like…my whole life now. It’s the only distance I run. I have run it like, 7 times in a row.

So tonight, I was ready to run my 3, and realized my Garmin was dead. Fale.

When life gives you scurvy, make lemonade.

I decided to go to the gym and run on the treadmill.

ZOMG is that boring. I haven’t run indoors in a long time, and I hope to only do it infrequently. My god is that boring.

So, my heel is sore. Not bad, but sore. I think at least one more week of 9 miles (3*3) is in order.

Opera

I have been fiddling with my environment again.

I am usually in a constant search for new programs that might change the way I work. I end up trying a lot of software and then dismissing it as not meeting my needs.

In a web heavy world, javascript execution time is king. We’ve seen recently all the work being done for future versions of Firefox as well as the Crome browsers js interpreter.

After getting fed up with Firefox’s abysmal performance on some js heavy sites, I decided to try Opera.

Before you break your mouse hand looking to leave a comment to blame Firefox’s performance on an add-on I have installed, stop. The first reason people give for Firefox being a great browser is “It’s got all these great add-ons”. And it does, but if they make the browser unusable for everyday surfing, it’s not a win. So sure, I could use a Firefox with no add-ons installed, but that’s a lot less compelling.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not planning to write much javascript without Firebug, but if I can’t scroll in Twitter without it hiccuping, it’s not really usable.

So besides blistering js execution speed (yes, I know that is coming to Firefox and when it does I will give it another go) in Opera, the other thing I really like is the ease in which I can change keybindings.

I have remapped the keys so I can use vim navigation for scrolling (jk/up and down, hl/side to side), but I also finally have M-w/C-y for cut and paste.

There are some things I don’t like.

Because it has a smaller userbase, and isn’t the darling child browser among developers, sometimes sites break. I am not sure if it’s the site or the browser who is to blame, but the sum total is, sometimes I have to use Firefox to get at some content. That sucks.

And finally, and this is a big one for me. It’s not Open Source.

The license page however acknowledges several open source frameworks and toolkits that it benefits from. Clearly they know the benefits of free software.

If they opened it up, I think they could eat Mozzila’s lunch.
