It’s Terminal

The doctor was very to the point. I am dying. Of hip pain. Tragic.

Just kidding. The usual. Took a xray, nothing jumped out at him. He doesn’t think it’s arthritis. Could be a Labrum Tear, could be some other irritation. He also noticed that I have a small bump on the head of my femur. He said that recently (the past 4 or 5 years) this sort of bump has been associated with similar pain to what I have.

No matter what, treatment is the same, Ibuprofen and Physical Therapy. I start Therapy at 7 am Friday morning (meaning I’ll have to get up at 5:30 am) and he upped my Ibuprofen dosage to 800 mg from the 600 I prescribed.

I asked several times how soon I can start running and he dodged the question as best he could. He did say I had to wait till the pain was gone. And finally said “How about we lay off the running for a week and see how therapy goes”.

Not only all that, but, I also have one leg shorter than the other and now have to wear a lift in my right shoe. He also commented on my crazy collapsing feet (I make over pronators look like neutral strikers), and mentioned I should get orthotics. I will be evaluated for all that at PT. What a mess.

I will give it my best shot to stay off the running for another week, but I make no promises. Prepare for rationalization!

Dude, for 1/10th of a second there, I thought you were serious about this whole dying thing. Don’t do that to me. ;)

You gotta find something else to do! Don’t run, you don’t want to hurt yourself more.

Sometimes I accumulate trivia despite my best efforts, and this time it may actually be relevant: http://www.sprintersports.com/

I saw this demoed on a show called the Dragon’s Den, where people pitch their businesses or products to VCs to get funding. The sprinter was designed to allow you to use a normal running motion, and the angle reduces impact on joints. When I first saw it, I thought, “That looks really goofy” but one of the VCs tried it out, and you really could run like normal, but the strap kept pulling you back to the same place.

The SUCKY part is that it doesn’t appear to be available for sale anywhere, but, hey, it’s basically a ramp and an innertube – you can make your own :)

  3. Hey Nate – Good luck with the PT. I’m curious to see what they do to evaluate you and what type of workouts are prescribed. Hopefully you will be back on the road soon.

Yeah… I got the rundown at work. But, I’m really curious to hear about the PT. If you were running, the added PT would be fun. Oh well… silver lining.

  5. Melissa, I am far to cranky to just up and die on you people. But thanks for making me feel like I’d be missed.

    Human, Sweet. Let’s build one.

William, I am also curious. I will blog about it at length I am sure. And thanks for the encouragement.

Edog, Fear not…I will be prattling on and on about each moment of my PT at work.
