2 hours on the pain train

Published by Nathan Powell on September 16, 2007 02:08 pm under running

This morning was my last long run before the half in two weeks. 12 miles of pain. I was still really sore from the race pace workout on Friday and then helping a friend move on Saturday. I was in pain from step one today. Brutalized is the only way to describe how I felt when I stopped.

I decided to try a cold bath when I finished in an attempt to be able to ever use my lower body again. All I can say is, um…that’s pretty horrible feeling as well. I lasted about 5 minutes in the cold water.

The watch said 12 miles, but when I uploaded it to Motionbased it came up as 11.99. So that’s how it goes in the books.

1 Mile splits: 10:32, 10:30, 10:28, 10:23, 10:16, 10:19, 10:28, 10:40, 10:35, 10:48, 11:06, 10:51

I think the pain is evident in that 11:06. That was wicked bad.

Some stats:
Distance: 11:99 mi
Time: 2:07:02 (pace: 10:33)
Average Heart Rate: 148 bpm
Calories Burned: 1885

    Don’t kill yourself, dude.

But you ran 12 miles. That’s awesome!

Just cold water won’t do it, it needs to be REALLY COLD. Need to make a “slurry” with ice in there as well. I usually fill the tub with water, and put like 8ish bags of ice in. Stay in there for a solid 15 minutes (after all, icing an injury for 5 minutes doesn’t do the trick). After about 3 minutes, everything is numb and you will be fine. Just bring a book in with you cause staring at the wall gets boring. After the 15 minutes, I just drain it and stay in there till its drained. Wait a couple minutes to get some feeling then start up a hot shower. The key to clearing the lactic acid is the cold loosens it up and the transition to hot clears it.

Another trick you can do every day. Lay on your back with your butt up against the wall and put your legs up on the wall for about 15 minutes. Massage the muscles and after a little you can feel it draining out of the legs. This is a good thing to do after all your runs (I do it almost daily when I am riding daily).

    I’ve got a million tricks…if you need more..just ask.

Ohh, and wear a pair of shorts or something and have someone take your picture are you are sitting down in that ice slurry and are loosing your breath. It certainly is worth a few laughs later on when you regain feeling.
