Digg
So Digg.com is slowly gathering momentum. And from what I am hearing at the expense of slashdot. Digg is nice, I use it. Generally speaking they have stories on there that slashdot may or may not have (and if the story will appear on both…it’s always on Digg first).
The idea is to get the editors out of the process and have the user base rate the articles. Thereby, the good articles will float to the top. However it has one drawback that is also evident at slashdot…namely the user community. If you have a little free time and want to test your blood pressure medicine, take a look at some of the comments from the users (at either site). Proof positive that an internet connection does not make you smart.
Usually I chock up comments like these to 14 year old boys with nothing better to do. However there can’t be that many 14 year olds in this world. So some of those comments must be from people over the age of 18. It’s pitiful. Ant any rate, if your tired of feeling optimistic about the human race, have a look.
We are a sinful people at heart! I still haven’t figured out how to make digg work for me. There is too much information. I’d like to set a threshold, but my interests don’t neccesarily compare to what other people find interesting. For example, I just looked through the top links section and found 2 articles that interested me and all I wanted to know was in the title so I didn’t click. It’s interesting and a step in the right direction, but isn’t quite what I’d want.
The Diggnation podcast is also interesting. If they could drop the language and occasional poor taste in jokes, I’d probably listen to it regularly.
The problem you mention is probably going to take awhile to solve. I want publicly reviewed information, but the people I’d like to do the reviewing don’t have the time. It’s the 14 year-old kids or people who differ little from said kids that say this is good. Often it isn’t, IMHO. I’d far rather hear about the development of Jingle on GAIM than an article about “Gamers with Chastity Belts”. I didn’t see any Jingle articles.
Hmmm… This appears to have turned into a rant. Sorry to be preaching to the choir. :-)
I suppose that is true. There is an overwhelming amount of information on there. However I think that the rating system is a good idea. Perhaps as it moves forward there will be better ways to filter content.
