Fear of flying
I have a pretty irrational fear of flying. It kind of sucks because it curses me to never go very far. I had been thinking over the last few weeks how nice it would be if I could overcome that. To that end I have been searching for information on the phobia.
Interestingly, there is a LOT of stuff out there about it. There are like a brazillion web sites, and after a brief Amazon search it would also appear there are a brazillian books too. I think I may try to pick up a few books on the subject. Why not approach it the way I do everything else…and study?
What exactly are you afraid of with regard to flying?
Mostly dying in that fashion. Knowing for minute after minute that the end is near. Being driven into the ground at high velocity. The massive amounts of fear and dread that would accompany such an experience. Little things. :)
(p.s. I did say it was irrational, but it is what goes through my head)
Baby steps man. Don’t start with flying. Start with bungee jumping ;)
I was going to suggest the method of immersion and tell you (and you might as well take Eric A. with you) to go grab a flight somewhere. But then I thought that if you had some sort of panic attack once on the plane that you might get thrown in jail for creating a disturbance, etc. Great times we live in, eh?
My only beef with dying in a plane crash is inadequate time to say goodbye to people and get my affairs in order. Other than that, whatev.
Challenging fears ranks as one of the best things you can do for yourself. Have fun beating that fear into submission!
Don, I should have added…I have flown before. The longest I have been in the air was about 4 hours. It was pretty uncomfortable. And the entire time I was away, I was dreading the trip back which made it no so fun to be somewhere pretty cool.
