Vegetarian

I just want to put this out there. There was a story on reddit today about being vegetarian, and it’s overall effect on global warming. Most of the comments on reddit from vegetarians seemed apologetic in nature. Like “I am sorry I am a vegetarian, but” .

Look it. Screw that. I am a vegetarian, have been for the last 15 years. I don’t owe you an explanation. Next time you sit down to dinner with someone who doesn’t eat meat, don’t ask them why they don’t eat meat. It’s none of your business. If you want to eat dead animals and be a dick about it, that’s your baggage… don’t ask me to defend myself.

My wife’s a vegetarian too. I never thought to blame her for global warming. She thinks that it’s ok for people to ask her about why she doesn’t eat meat as long as it’s done in a genuinely curious manner (because there are many different reasons for being a vegetarian) rather than in a “What’s your beef with eating meat?” manner. Actually, that sounds kind of funny, but you know what I mean.

  2. Hey Don,Yeah I don’t mind if it comes up in conversation with friends. Mostly my “beef” is with people I don’t know very well, who come across as offended when they ask.

hhm… I may have missed something here, but why would ppl be offended by you being a vegetarian ? Sounds like “anti-political-correctness-nazis” to me (if such word exists). My wife’s a “veggie” too (for over 14 yrs now), but we haven’t met many ppl that have questioned her choice. And I would react the same way as you do if they did

Who said anything about eating DEAD animals…

  5. rbohn! Oh Yeah, Live animals? Totally cool with me.

  6. Nils, yeah from time to time I get the ‘self righteous indignation’ that I am somehow undermining the American way by not easting animals. Whatever, I just wanted to make sure that documented that I don’t need to explain myself :)
