Day 6 of the January Juice Fast

Here we are, on the downhill side of the fast. 4 days to go after today (a mere 12 juices).

I have been avoiding juices that contain beets as I don’t like the flavor in a drink. I think I might continue to do so. Beets are one of my favorite foods, and I don’t want to ruin them by drinking them. This fast is transient. Beets are forever.

We got about 3″ of snow last night, and I was dreading shoveling/snow blowing but I had plenty of energy for it. I felt so good today that I think I’ll hit the gym tomorrow and try a short run.

For breakfast I went with 2 pears, pineapple slices and an orange (~20oz). I would drink this even if I weren’t fasting. In fact my plan is to have some combination of pears/pineapple/orange in the morning for the rest of the fast (frickin’ yum man).

Lunch and dinner were repeats so I’ll leave that out.

I am sick to death of washing that juicer. While I think it’s a perfectly nice juicer, and I also think it’s not that difficult to clean I am still over it. 3 times a day, every day. I plan to do a review post on the juicer when this is all over, so I’ll stop there.

Time for herbal tea (no caffeine/no sugar) and then bed.

Later.

I admit that I am using you as a sort of guinea pig for a future juice fast, thinking June or July. I am actually thrilled that you dislike the taste of beets in the juicer, because beets are the only vegetable I do not eat. :) I got sick off a dish made with beets when I was a kid and I have never been able to eat them again. Admittedly I could probably eat them now, but because I like everything else there has never been a need for me to insert them back into my diet.

That breakfast juice sounds awesome. Did you purchase most of the vegetables and fruits you needed for the fast in advance, or have you been purchasing as you go? I am just thinking that doing this fast would initially require purchasing in advance to remove whatever hassles and distractions from the routine that I can. I know you mentioned going grocery shopping one evening and how difficult it was.

  2. I love beets. I would eat beets everyday. But yeah, a lot of the recipes have beets in them. I have just been changing them, or sticking with recipes I know I like. I am still getting a pretty wide array of veggies, but am still avoiding kale and beets.

I went to Wegman’s last Sunday before day one and loaded up. But I was kind of disorganized and didn’t get nearly enough. So I have had to go to the store a few times. Tuesday night is my typical night for shopping, and that was only day 2 so that was hard. But the rest of the visits have been fine.

I will say it does take some forethought. I will often wash a lot of the veggies in advance so I can just juice them as needed. That takes up a lot of time and it’s nice to have it out of the way. It also allows me to use hot water to clean the veggies since they will be going back in the fridge to cool before using them. I prefer the juices cold and cold veggies make cold juice. Pro Tip: Pre-cut apples and put them in a container with water and some lemon or lime juice so they don’t brown. It’s great to have a bunch of apple chunks handy and ready to juice.
